British Columbia Foundation for Prostate Disease
"to improve knowledge, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer"

The British Columbia Foundation for Prostate Disease is a prostate cancer survivor based organization and a component of the growing support group movement in British Columbia and across Canada. In B.C. there are approximately 3500 men and their spouses participating in over 30 community level prostate cancer support groups focused on providing information and emotional support to prostate cancer patients and their families. Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canadian men and B.C. has one of the highest incidence of prostate cancer in Canada. In B.C., in 2007, some 3200 men were diagnosed with the disease and some 550 of them would die from it. These statistics are similar to breast cancer. A diagnosis of prostate cancer is a devastating experience for men and their families. Early detection is the key to optimizing the treatment options available.

The British Columbia Foundation for Prostate Disease was incorporated under the Society’s Act in January 1998 and is Registered Charity # 87105-7840 RR0001. Various support group members met to determine  some additional course of action that might be taken to spread awareness of this growing disease. It was from this desire to provide a more local resource of support by men who had the cancer and understood the problem and its associated concerns that that the Foundation was formed.
